“If we act in clean way, we shall clear the city of any dirt.” ― Lailah Gifty Akita.
The District Chief Executive (DCE) of Ningo-Prampram District Assembly, Hon. AL-Latiff Tetteh Amanor at the cleanup exercise in Afienya Township disclosed to residents that the cleanup exercise is backed by law and there are punitive measures for non-compliance. It was therefore necessary to launch the “𝒐𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒄𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒏 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒈𝒆” to create awareness and education.
“It’s my hope, the honorable assembly members and unit committee members will exercise patience to visit the various vicinities to educate all on the bye-laws”. The law has been in existence and we kept a sleeping eye on it. We can recall in some time past, town council officials came around to inspect even our drinking water. This exercise ensured we kept our surroundings clean”.
As citizens, “we have been calling on government for developmental projects but have also overlooked what is expected of us as and our contribution to maintaining a clean environment”.
“The operation clean your frontage is a reminder that the law has been passed and assented. When apprehended for not maintaining a clean environment, nobody can rescue or intervein on your behalf. Let’s embrace this law for our own good.” He added.
Speaking to residents at the cleanup exercise the District Environmental Health officer, madam Evelyn Nani said the “𝒐𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒄𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒏 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒈𝒆” campaign is an initiative by the Honorable Regional Minister for Greater Accra, Hon. Henry Quartey. This is aimed to support our president’s initiative to make Greater Accra region the cleanest city in Africa.
The Ningo – Prampram District Assembly first organized a float as a means to sensitize the people and launched the “operation clean your frontage” campaign at Dawhenya.
Today, we are here at Afienya Area Council with the clean up exercise. As we have all come out it’s a sign, we are ready to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa and your turnup is very encouraging.
There’s a bye law that has been enacted. Every assembly is having a copy. Every household is to ensure their surroundings are kept clean to the middle of the road. If you don’t comply the law would be applied on you. We are to register with the service providers; zoom lion and others. They will provide waste bins for us to keep our waste for our city to be clean.
The environmental officers will be coming around to inspect and monitor the level of cleaning activities. if anyone is apprehended, the law will take it’s full course. He entreated them not fall for victim.
The assembly member for Afienya Electoral Area, Hon. Habib charged residents to keep their environments clean as officials will be coming round to ensure the environment is kept clean. The law will not be compromised when caught. Therefore, let’s ensure the directives laid are followed diligently to avoid prosecution whatsoever.
Also, the zonal council chairman for Prampram, Hon. Gabriel Doku thanked all who joined the cleanup exercise and assured this cleanup is not going to be a nine-day wonder affair but persistent activity.
The cleanup exercise was well attended. In attendance were District officials from the Environmental Health Directorate, National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Assembly Members, Security service personnel, Zoom Lion, Students from the Afienya Youth Leadership Skills Institute and general public joined in the exercise.
