NiPDA Meet Hoteliers

The management of the Ningo Prampram District Assembly in collaboration with the District Environmental Health and Sanitation Department, has organised a one-day workshop with hoteliers and hospitality industry players in the District. The rationale of the meeting was to educate participants on the importance of sanitation and proper hygienic practices in the hospitality industry.

They were educated on hygienic ways to refrigerate cooked and uncooked food, proper food handling for guest, disinfection of beddings and the entire facilities to prevent food poisoning and transmission of infections.

Interacting with the participants, the District Chief Executive, Hon. Al-Latiff Tetteh Amanor commended the industry players for their relentless efforts in projecting the district. He acknowledged how the poor road networks had had an adverse effect on their businesses. He also assured them of his efforts to have the district elevated to the status of a municipality. This would enable them acquire a grader to construct the inner roads in the district and ultimately improving their business patronage.

According to the DCE, reduction of land guard activities, land litigation and general security in the district are his top most priorities of which the hospitality industry would tremendously benefit from. He is also ensuring the construction of the Lalue Bridge, which would connect the district to Tema without using the ECOWAS Highway. The influx of traders, commuters and revellers would also boost economic activities for the hospitality players as well.

He admonished them to adhere to health and sanitation guidelines as they project the district globally through their hospitality activities.

Speaking to the participants on sanitation and hygienic practices, the District Environmental Health Officer, Ms. Evelyn Nani, encouraged them to fumigate their facility every quarter with a certified officer of the District Assembly, to ensure that approved and unexpired disinfectants are used.

She also informed the members that the department would be conducting periodic facility inspection to ensure clients safety. She advised them to ventilate their facilities properly, keep their restrooms clean and disinfected, wash beddings after every single use and get rid of cockroaches, bedbugs, wall geckos and other insects.

She reiterated the need to prevent food poisoning as well as transmission of other medical conditions to customers. Therefore, all staff must be medically screened especially those at the food handling unit and must wear the standardized personal protective apparel always.

The participants were also advised to register with waste service providers in the district and desist from burning waste on their premises or throwing them into the sea. This practice only litter the beaches with refuse and the liquid waste pollutes the air. There are registered waste providers who would ensure that the wastes (liquid and solid) are disposed of properly at their final disposal sites. The facility owners along the beaches were advised as a matter of Law (Operation Clean Your Frontage), to clean the beaches regularly.

The District Coordinating Director. Mr. Bernard Mats Yingura entreated the participants to maintain high level standards as the district is evolving with industrialisation. He mentioned that the Assembly is liaising with Association of Ghana industries to hold an Industrial Fair. He cited the Dawa industrial park as one of the industrial hubs in the district.

The participants, mentioned poor road networks, open defecation and inadequate water supply as some of the major challenges derailing their business. They called on the management of the district Assembly to come to their aid.
